Three Boards. One Mission.
A modular, military-spec power system built from three interchangeable PCB boards connected via Deutsch connectors.

Board 1 — Cartridge BMS

Manages battery cartridges with cell-level monitoring, charge/discharge protection, and CAN communication to the base unit.

Board 2 — Base Unit

The brain of the system. Routes power, manages CAN bus communication, and controls output to connected plates and dongles.

Board 3 — Plate / Dongle

The output interface. Automatically configures voltage and current path based on the connected plate type.

How Lightning Rod Works
Every Lightning Rod system follows the same straightforward flow: a power source charges the base unit, the base unit manages the power, and an output plate delivers it safely to your devices.
01

Connect a Power Source

The base unit accepts power from multiple sources — solar panels, wind systems, battery cartridges, AC mains, vehicle alternators, or even a USB-C laptop charger. Use whatever is available in the field.

02

The Base Unit Controls Everything

The base unit is the brain. It monitors battery health, manages charge and discharge, balances cells, and routes the right amount of power to the attached output plate. It communicates with every cartridge and plate over a CAN bus network — all automatically.

03

Attach an Output Plate

Output plates snap onto the base unit and auto-configure at boot. Each plate type delivers a specific voltage and connector — NATO 28V, USB, 120V AC, 12V automotive, 48V telecom, and more.

04

Safely Connect Your Devices

Plug your equipment into the output plate. The system continuously monitors voltage, current, and temperature through four independent protection layers. If anything goes out of range, the system shuts down that output — automatically, instantly, and without operator input.

Inside the Lightning Rod
A modular three-board architecture designed for field reliability. Every connection is Deutsch. Every board is IPC Class 3.
Board 1 BMS

Cartridge Battery Management

Each battery cartridge carries its own BMS board. It monitors cell voltage, temperature, and state of charge — then reports everything to the base unit over CAN bus.

Up to 5 cartridges can be daisy-chained on a single port. The base unit sees every cartridge individually and can isolate any one that falls out of spec.

Board 2 Base Unit

The Base Unit — System Brain

The base unit runs Linux on a BeagleBone Black Industrial. It manages 7 independent CAN channels — four for cartridge ports, two for inter-base linking, and one for the output plate bus.

A sunlight-readable display shows real-time voltage, current, cartridge status, and fault codes. All information at a glance, even in direct sunlight.

Board 3 Output Plate

Output Plates & Dongles

Output plates are where power meets your equipment. Each plate reads its own 4-bit hardware ID at boot and auto-configures for the correct voltage, current limit, and power path.

Two power paths: a regulated buck converter for low-current dongles, and a direct pass-through for high-current plates up to 20A. Same PCB, different population.

Engineered for Extremes
Every component, connector, and design choice optimized for absolute reliability in the field. No compromises.

Virtually Silent Operation

Pure battery power with no generator required. No thermal or acoustic signature. Critical for tactical, medical, and sensitive operations.

IPC Class 3 Military Standard

All three PCBs at the highest military reliability specification. 2-4oz copper, HASL lead-free finish.

Deutsch Connectors — No Exceptions

IP69K-rated DT and HD30 series everywhere. Size 12 contacts at 25A per pin. 10,000+ mating cycles.

Multi-Source Charging

AC mains, solar, vehicle/generator, and USB-C PD. Charge from whatever power source is available.

Air-Gapped Security

No WiFi, no Bluetooth, no GPS. Wired USB-C firmware only. Zero wireless attack surface.

3-Phase Ready Architecture

Three bases synchronize for 208V/240V 3-phase AC — no hardware changes needed when firmware is ready.

Hot-Swap Battery Cartridges

Add or remove cartridges without system shutdown. CAN chain sensing tracks every cartridge individually.

Swappable Output Plates

Same base, any output. Auto-identifies via 4-bit hardware ID at boot. NATO, USB, AC, 12V, 48V, and more.

Dual Power Path Architecture

Dongles get clean regulated power. Plates bypass the regulator for direct high-current pass-through.

Field-Replaceable Fuses

Standard automotive mini blade fuses. Color-coded. Available at any auto parts store. No special tools.

Sunlight-Readable Display

3.5 inch IPS at 950 nits via HDMI. Readable in direct sunlight without shading.

Star Grounding Architecture

Power and signal ground meet at one point per board. Eliminates ground loops and noisy readings.

One Base. Any Output.
Nine output types across military, commercial, automotive, and telecom standards. Each auto-identifies and self-configures at boot.
